Description

Common Name: Bucephalandra Green Broad Leaf (GLA Potted Plant)

Bucephalandra Green Broad Leaf (GLA Potted Plant) is identified by the flowering plant family, Araceae. In their natural rainforest habitat, Buce plants are found growing as dense mats in waters with strong currents, attached to rocks or stones in flood zones or streams and rivers. Buce plants are rewarding nature aquarium masterpieces with truly captivating names unique to each one discovered or cultivated. Petite in size and coveted for their distinctive leaves displaying an extensive and vibrant color palette.

Similar to other epiphytes (such as Anubias and Cryptocoryne) Bucephalandra plants can be attached to your aquarium hardscape rocks or driftwood etc. Buce can also be planted in soil, however, take caution never to bury or cover the rhizome as this will cause melt and decay. When planning your aquascape, tiny varieties of Buce are best planted in the aquarium foreground and larger leaf varieties do well in the midground. They complement mosses and ferns beautifully with their dramatic contrasting colors and robust leaves of varying shapes and textures. Bucephalandra grow very slowly, and can be cultivated both submerged or immersed (keeping very very moist conditions).

This plant is slow-growing, with new leaves emerging from long, thin rhizomes. With CO2 injection, nutrients, medium lighting they will grow healthier and faster with new vibrant leaves and side shoots (which can be propagated). Bucephalandra may be propagated by cutting of the rhizome side shoots and then securing to hardscape with super glue or thread.

Their best growth rate and coloration is yielded in medium lighting with strong water current, however, Buce adapt well to a range of aquarium lighting from low to high. They prove resilient and rather easy to grow under stable aquarium conditions, especially when CO2 and nutrients are provided. Sudden changes to aquarium conditions or unstable parameters may cause shedding of their leaves or die off, however, with time new leaves can regrow if the rhizome is healthy.

  • Family Name: Araceae
  • Type: Epiphyte
  • pH: 6.5-7.5
  • Care: Easy, low maintenance
  • Light: Low to medium
  • CO2: not required or +/-30ppm will promote faster growth
  • Propagation: rhizome division
  • Growth rate: slow, faster under higher lighting (may cause algae)
  • Growth state: emersed or submerge

How to Plant, Grow and Care for Bucephalandra Green Broad Leaf in your Planted Aquarium

  • Bucephalandra rhizomes can be attached to rock, driftwood or hardscape. Secure with strong thread until it roots securely. It can also be planted in soil substrate with the rhizome exposed (do not bury rhizome or it will decay).
  • Bucephalandra may be placed either submersed or emersed in a variety of aquarium conditions: medium lighting, CO2 and fertilizer not required but will promote faster and more colorful growth.
  • Buce plants grow very slow, and to avoid algae growth, it's best to plant in lower lighting or shadier area of aquascape with good water circulation. Phosphate supplementation aids in algae control.
  • Propogation is achieved by cutting the rhizome and replanting or securing the rhizome until new roots and leaves develop.
  • Always research first and make cautious modifications to your aquarium to avoid unstable tank conditions that can cause plant melting and decay.
  • CO2 injection is highly recommended for your aquascape. CO2 is recommended around +/-30ppm.
  • A well researched aquarium fertilizing routine is recommended for your plant(s) to grow healthy, vibrant in color, and be nutrient deficiency and algae free.
  • Your aquarium plants will grow best in adequate lighting, medium to high lighting is recommended.
  • Even the easiest aquarium plants require adequate and regular maintenance and care to keep your aquarium ecosystem healthy.
  • Trim your plants appropriately with sharp scissors to prune and/or propagate and to maintain your desired aquascape.
  • Keep your aquarium pH and general hardness (GH) stable and targeted to your aquascape plan. Aquarium pH of 6-8 is recommended for your plants.
  • Use nutrient rich soil substrate in your aquarium to give your plants the best start.

    A++ Aquarium Plants

Posted by Greg Minnor on 18th Feb 2020

Very impressed with everything. I have ordered from most every vendor in aquarium plants and GLA quality is unmatched in several ways. Packaging was obviously on GLA's priority, they A+ that. Quality of plants was like nothing Ive every experienced. They were completely perfect, how do you guys do this? It was as if they were in suspended animation and never left the greenhouse, just perfect plants and generous proportions. I purchased a lot of plants from GLA for my new aquascape and they are all ding great. GLA may not have all the varieties but what they lack in variety they make up in quality everything. Ive also noticed as I waited to make my review the list of plants continues to expand. Its much larger than when I placed my order, Kudos to GLA for increasing the menu options. Im forever a loyal customer, never in my experience of buying live plants have I ever seen a shipment arrive looking the way mine did. A++
