Cyperus Helferi (bare)
Genus: Cyperus Common name(s):
Distribution: Thailand, Asia
Plant type: rosette
Description & growth: Cyperus helferi is native to Thailand, found growing both emersed and submersed in slow-flowing water bodies. Cyperus helferi was the first Cyperus species used in the aquarium, it is capable of submersed growth, unlike others species in its genus. In the aquarium, it requires a somewhat long acclimation period. Thrives in moderate to bright light. CO2 injection is recommended and will promote more rapid growth. Prefers water temperatures below 80 F and moderate water current. Nutrient rich substrate and regular fertilization of nitrate, phosphate, potassium and micronutrients will encourage rapid and robust growth. Lack of proper nutrients will slow growth. Produces long, narrow, light green, flowing leaves and small root system. Striking light green presence, leaves sway beautifully in aquariums with good water flow. To reduce its size, it is not recommended to trim leaves in half; instead, remove leaves at base of plant, individually, to prevent yellowing and poor health. Best suited for growth in taller, larger aquariums. Runners containing daughter plantlets form at base of healthy mother plants. To propagate, separate daughter plants, of at least 3 inches in size containing sufficient leaves, with scissors and replant. Somewhat rare aquarium plant due to its slow growth and difficult cultivation.
