Anubias Nana (potted)
Plant type: rhizome
Description & growth: Excellent growth in variety of aquarium or terrarium conditions, easy and ideal for beginners. Slender, compact leaves. Produces flowers. Adaptable to range of water hardness and pH conditions. Fertilization and iron supplement encourage optimal growth; otherwise slow growing and undemanding midground plant. Best to plant in shade or low light to restrict algae growth on leaves. Anubias Nana is commonly found growing along the shallow portions of forest rivers in Cameroon, Africa. It is a very hardy, common aquarium plant. Its creeping rhizome produces long-lasting leaves and occasional flowers. Tolerant to a variety of lighting conditions, from low to bright. It can be grown emersed and does well with or without CO2. CO2, nutrient rich substrate and removal of older leaves promotes faster growth. Higher phosphate levels tend to encourage flowering. In addition, higher phosphate levels, iron and trace fertilization help to reduce spot algae problems in tanks with higher light. Plant in a shadier area of tank to help reduce algae growth. Leaves survive for years. Leaves grow up to 6cm long. Growth form tends to creep horizontally, so plan properly. Produces more frequent flowers. To propagate, cut the rhizome into two or more pieces, dependent on size of plant. Not recommended to cover rhizome when planted to avoid rot. Easily fasten to driftwood or rock with fishing line or thread. Not eaten by herbivorous fish.
Pruning & propogation: To propagate, cut the rhizome into two or more pieces, ensure leaves on all segments.
